CUNINA BOARDING
SCHOOL IN Sekha

The Cunina Boarding School in Sekha started in 2008 and now provides services to over 500 students annually.

WHY HAS CPET
STARTED THIS PROJECT?

Children that live in and around Sekha did not have access to education. Students had to walk for three hours to get to the nearest quality school. Due to the poor infrastructure of existing schools in the region, CPET started their own schools where Khandbari’s business community can send their children to get high quality education through sponsorships. In fact, a lot of families moved to live closer to the school.

The entire premise of CPET is to provide quality and affordable education to students living in remote areas. The minium monthly fee start from Rs. 800 and the average monthly fee for students to attend our school is Rs. 1200, which is much cheaper than other private schools in the region.

WHAT HAS CPET DONE
IN THE PAST?

Cunina purchased the land for the Cunina Boarding School in 2008. At the time, there were only rice terraces here. Firstly, the land had to be leveled, which is quite a task! People from the neighborhood were very curious and came to look at the large excavators. While wearing slippers, the workers – women too – used pickaxes to cut the bricks for the school out of rocks. Some of the workers applied mortar. It was a very medieval situation. This is how we built the kindergarten and primary school. Together they consist of fourteen classrooms, toilets, a recreation hall and a janitor’s office, which is used to guard the school.

We have completed the first Music & Arts school in this area. Teaching children to read, calculate and write is important, but they also have the right to develop their talents and creativity.

WHAT WILL CPET DO
IN THE FUTURE?

At the moment we are planning to engage students through a sports development program to improve overall well-being of the children. Further, to help make access to the school, easier, we are planning to start a school bus service to make it accessible for more students to attend the school.

Once the students finish their higher secondary level, Cunina aims to enroll its students in technical filed of skill gaining courses such as modern agriculture, hospitality, etc. This will allow the students to gain skills, enhancing them to be equipped with practical knowledge to work in the current market.

We work together with the local community and use local materials to support the local economy and create jobs.
